Aura's hunting dogs are at her feet. Cupid gestures towards a ship, found on the arms of the Dukes of Hamilton. The scene may depict the Rape of Aura by Dionysus. From the Renaissance onwards, mythological scenes were utilised to show learning and sophistication on the part of the commissioner, and those who could puzzle out their meanings. If it does not show this particular scene, the goddess depicted could be either Aphrodite or Artemis instead of Aura, all of whom share an iconography of the huntress with her dogs.
